Feather Installation and excerpt

(click for larger photo)

Feather installation/sculpture 7ft 5in long. My instructor yesterday called this beautiful. I love it, I just wish I never had to take it down. I want to do something with it, I just have no idea what to do. Maybe in my apartment sometime later in life?

Excerpt from my paper:
Florescent stale light illuminating. No shadows. Enlarged hills and crevices of pale brown with yellow and red tints, becoming more and more red. Holes and inflammation. Skewed perspectives on appearance. White and black specs in masses, overwhelming. Un-controlling. Creating routines. Time consumption. A lot of time consumption. drip. drip. drip. drip... Cramp. Fuck. Oh well,

Red tinted routine. Repetitive. Repetitive. Reflections creating vast differences from reality, perceived as actual. Inflammation on top of yesterday’s inflammation. Old scars, reminders of my habits. Still overwhelming and always uncontrolled. Explorations of already chartered territory, nothing changes.

Waiting for paint to dry, literally

One of my first attempts at 3D art. Currently I'm working on a 'magic box'. I'll have pictures up over Thanksgiving Break. I can't wait to sleep through all of Thanksgiving break.

Life flows on within and without you

(click for a larger,better photo)

I am currently studying Art History, in front of a fireplace at the Jannes Library while it is snowing outside. This is wonderful.

This is my latest piece, a self portrait in acrylic, 22"x28". I like it a lot.

the end.

KCAI in a nutshell

class. ssion afterparty rave. ari fish crazy. gross dudes. not so gross dudes. phone books. bored in class. studio. boxes. food. boxes. little sleep. art history quiz. personal essay. beautiful weather. the nelson. the green. food. winsteads. the park. captain. freshman friday. first friday. westport. jerusalem cafe sucking. tea drops. driving. cvs. walking. food. sleep. boxes. nicki. sasha. chloe. =love.

alex and scotty surprised me last night and came to kc! not a lot was going on and I kind of felt bad about that, but it was still awesome. they kick ass. the nelson was sweet though with the trapeze artists, but they came after that. so sweet. next time sleepover?

i seriously love it here. i'm doing what i love to do and it's easier to do homework because i love what i'm doing. art history and writing are so interesting, sometimes i'd rather do that than be in studio. love. my friends are awesome, both in lawrence and in kc. my dorm is awesome. my roommate is seriously the shit and i couldn't have asked for better. i really don't know what to say, i just love it. i mean yeah, there are a few things that aren't so great. cafeteria food gets old. i don't get enough sleep. sometimes weekends are too much work. i'm sick of drawing boxes. but really other than that, it is amazing.

Reminiscing?

Excerpt from my paper that I thought was due tomorrow, but is actually due next wednesday, I am awesome.

I couldn’t wait to visit my relatives in central Kansas, driving through the boundless, raw Flint Hills. I would stay awake through the whole drive, silent, just staring out the window at the infinite, flat horizon. I completely absorbed it. Gazing at the hazy meadow of whispering wheat, swaying in the wind. I find a need to write,
These are the days we will
reminisce,
thinking about now and what is to come.

this will be the conscious time
to be remembered.

Before I left my hometown I was comfortable, familiar. Comfortable with myself, my art, and my surroundings. I felt confident being one of the more talented students in my art class, winning awards and being recognized for it. I was surrounded by maturity, but in reality was immature and couldn’t take in my environment and the personalities around me.

Haha, you can tell my main focus was wanting to put my poetry in it.
I'll write more on KCAI later, but in short- LOVE it.

new beginnings, dreams in my way

My first new edition to my etsy account! I'm going to start posting when I have a bunch of products together in middle August so my income while I'm at school can be from the work I've done this summer before my work-study starts up. This onesie is a cotton-polyester blend with a handstitched sunflower of corduroy and cotton and is for the 6-9 month age range. I have to wait for my partner, Catherine Morel, to get back from Michigan to go much further on details, because she has some Modge-Podge of mine.

Nonetheless, I'm happy to be able to work again, use my non-swollen hands, and do what I want to do instead of working my part time job.

one traffic light town

Two lovers lay
beneath a sheath of blue
in that one traffic light town.
Nostalgic recreations
once removed now
brought to light-
Will time continue to stand still
while we
reminisce?

little favorites

I randomly got an urge to look through all my friend's artwork and just realized how surrounded I am by talent. I saved my favorites and wanted to post them here. From top to bottom the artists are: Alex Swanson, Juliet Renault, Sarah Stern, and Mulligan Greenwell. My top for favorites were also women- something that surprised me since the art scene seems so male dominant.

twins

The top photo is of my newer journal that i've become very attached to. Most of the artwork I've been doing this summer is journaling and sketching. But I am working on a new piece inspired by the bottom photo of my mom (on the left) and her twin. It's a portrait of the two of them in central Kansas, very simple. I also slightly based it off of a family story when my mom's dad was out on the farm with his brother when his brother was decapitated by a windmill. Brutal. The main point of the piece is that if feels like an 'ode to Kansas' for me before I leave.

chorale

Here's a song from KMEA this last march. A little over a minute into it is my solo. Again the video is not that great, just put together really fast.

artstar

Here's the article on my artstar of the year, pretty cheesy but still awesome.

I also got an etsy account as a second job thing for the summer to make money on the side. I'm doing it with my friend, catherine.

Above is a beautiful painting by Grant Wood. American Gothic is undoubtedly amazing, but I feel like his other works are overlooked. I especially love the laze in this piece. Very midwestern, which I love.

false air

I don't know who I am;
my spine has left me.
I am now more than ever
alive, blood rushing throughout
my veins
tasting the false air
surrounding me.

sheet talk

I just found out I won the LJWorld's overall artstar for the year. I really needed that scholarship money towards art supplies. I'll post the article on here when it comes out. I feel more balanced now, good coming with the bad and all.

This is probably one of my favorite poems I have written:

White curtains
cover white blinds surrounded by white window frames,
yellow morning light cascading in .
These are the days we will
reminisce,
thinking about now and what is to come.
For now we lay under rose colored sheets
illuminating our skin-
a giggle softly spoken
a top magic marker stains,
reminders of hazy nights
now unforgettable

noses near,
lips still

this will be the conscious time
to be remembered

in bloom

"If in barbed wire things can bloom,
why couldn't I? I will not die, I will not die."

This link is from LJworld's site, showing my group documentary with Rosemary O'Malley and Sara Cortese. This link doesn't have any of the background music, and our sound in general really wasn't that bad but I can't find any other recording.

In honor of father's day, here's my journal from my junior year. (right page)

romance

In hopes of making this an equal art/music/writing blog, here's a recording of my senior flute recital. This recording is Camille Saint-Saens Romance. The video is really, really rough. I just threw it together without transititions with some photos that kind of made sense with it. But it's really just to be heard, not watched. It isn't processed yet but should be soon. (It is soooo much harder to add music than art or writing)

Also: I finally signed up for classes at KCAI next year. I had a pretty funny dream about it last night. My schedule is:
Foundation Studio 100-03 MTWRF (8:00am-11:50am)- Staff
Western Art I TR (2:30 pm-3:50 pm) - Michele Fricke
Writing Workshop- W (1:00 pm-3:50 pm) - Chloe Jones

It's going to be rough having class at 8am everyday, but I felt that I would be more productive waking up that early than sleeping in and having class until 5pm. I have already met both of my teachers at the open house and have heard a lot about them. Chloe Jones is a feminist writer from KU and Michele Fricke is known for being one of KCAI's best teachers. I hope my studio teacher is enjoyable, I think it will matter a lot towards my determination.

the coming change

Clouds over meadows
vast plains through a window pane.
A glimpse,
new beginnings of
dreams in my way.
Covering shadows cascading
my thoughts will not stay,
a tooth falls on grounds of old
native lands gone-
your breath will escape for a
change is to come.

found within

The hazy meadow of
whispering wind
found within-
white wheat swaying
through the open mist:
another way is won.
